MPC's no-dig pipe replacement methods are quicker, cheaper and cause far less disruption than traditional open trenching methods.

It is ideal for all urban applications where an existing pipeline has exceeded it's useful life. This system can be utilized beneath buildings, roads, rivers or bridges and avoids traffic delays; thus any interruption of supplies or inconvenience to residents and businesses is kept to a minimum.

Sewage and gas mains often suffer structural damage due to corrosion, tree root infestation, pipe settlement or because of inaccurately laid pipe joints.

Repair to these pipes has placed a heavy financial burden upon the utility companies and subsequently, the end consumers. This repair work has been estimated to run into billions in the U.K., Germany and France and of course affects virtually every country in the world.

One of the most cost effective methods of replacing these pipes either size for size or, as is often the case due to increased consumer demand, upsizing them is Pipe Bursting.

By using this system the old water, sewage or gas main is shattered into small pieces and pushed laterally into the surrounding earth. The original pipe diameter is replaced or upsized by using an expander and the replacement PE or PVC pipe is then towed into the new bore hole.

With the aide of Bentonite/concrete slurry, the new tunnel can be consolidated by incorporating the pipe fragments into the mix. This also protects the new pipe against scratches or damage during fitting.

A twin capstan hydraulic winch guides the hammer through the old pipe and can break through even the toughest joints.

The chief advantage of this system is being able to replace the pipe with one of a bigger diameter without having to dig up the old main.

Hydraulic System:

Starting from a pit just 2.20m long and only 0.6m wide, pipes can be installed in both directions. A thrust power of 250kN enables obstacles in the old pipeline to be overcome.

When reversing, the bore profile is expanded to accommodate the new pipe. Expanders are available from ND75 up to ND200. Multi-way PE pipes can be pulled in directly from the pipe coil trailers.

Small pits are excavated at convenient positions 100m apart so that 200m of pipe can be burst at any one time. By launching from the centre pit, whilst the rods are being pulled back installing the new pipe in the first 100m length, the rod string is fed into the other, second section of the pipe to be replaced. By repeating this exercise, lengths of over a 1000m can be in one week by one gang.

MPC own both hydraulic and pneumatic systems and offer a complete contract Pipe Bursting service which is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Summary of Advantages:

1) Pipes made from fracturable materials such as clay, non-reinforced concrete, cast iron, plastic and thin walled steel can be replaced.
2) New pipes of equal or larger carrying capacity can be installed.
3) Simple to operate and requires and limited amount of capital equipment.
4) Short length machine are available for Pipe Bursting from manhole to manhole.
5) For water, sewage and gas pipes.
6) Wide choice of machine diameters with practical accessories
